Quick verdict: pick by job, not by hype
Pay for Midjourney if stills are the product, you like that look, and you will work in its web app. Discord is optional now. Individuals can use paid Midjourney commercially. Companies over $1M gross a year need Pro or Mega.
Pay for OpenArt if you want one browser tab for image, edit, character, and video — and you will use more than one model. For clients, merch, or ads, the plan that matters is Plus, not Starter.
Do not buy OpenArt Starter at $14 and call it cheaper than Midjourney Basic at $10. Starter is for experimenting. Watermark-free is not commercial. Plus at $34 a month ($27 billed annually) is the commercial floor.

What each tool actually is in 2026
Midjourney is an image company that added video. You prompt, you get a look that is still recognisably Midjourney, and you iterate. It started on Discord. In 2026 the web app at midjourney.com is a real product. Discord is still there if you want it. No free tier. Cheapest way in is Basic.
OpenArt is a creator studio in the browser. No Discord. You pick models instead of marrying one house style. The homepage stack includes Seedream 5.0, Seedance 2.0, Veo 3/3.1, GPT Image 2, Nano Banana Pro, Sora 2, Kling 3.0, Grok Imagine, MiniMax Hailuo, and Wan 3.0, plus a long tail. Around that sit Character Builder, Music Video, OpenArt Director, and an edit canvas. One credit pool covers the lot. OpenArt is 18+.
Image quality
OpenArt images do not reliably beat Midjourney if what you want is that Midjourney still. Midjourney’s advantage is consistency of taste. Clients who say “make it look like Midjourney” are asking for that, not a model picker.
OpenArt’s advantage is range. GPT Image 2, Seedream 5.0, and Nano Banana Pro are not the same generator. Text, photorealism, and illustration all shift when you change model. Discord, web app, daily workflow
Midjourney’s Discord era is not gone, but it is no longer the product. Daily work can live on the web: prompt bar, gallery, settings.
OpenArt is web-first. Sign in, pick a model, generate, edit on a canvas, save a character, send a still to video. No server. No bot commands. Midjourney feels like one instrument. OpenArt feels like a rack of them.
Character consistency and still to video
OpenArt’s Character Builder is a library. Build a character from references or a brief, save it, tag it, reuse it in later images and clips. That is the still-to-video path for a faceless channel. Director is the storyboard layer on top. Pricing-page video estimates exclude Director. Budget extra credits if that is your pipeline.
Midjourney can keep a subject close across stills if you work references carefully, and it can animate a still. Treat that as bringing a Midjourney frame to life, not a multi-model video desk.
Video
OpenArt is a video menu. Image-to-video and text-to-video sit next to Music Video and Director. Veo 3/3.1, Seedance 2.0, Kling 3.0, Sora 2, and the rest sit under one subscription. Credits jump hard on video. Clip counts on the pricing page are estimates and exclude Director. Plus lists up to about 150 videos a month on 12,000 credits — a ceiling for light clips, not a promise on expensive models.
Midjourney sells video from the same GPU-hour pool as images. Official plan comparison: Basic is SD; Standard, Pro, and Mega add HD. Unlimited Relax for images starts at Standard. Unlimited Relax for SD video is Pro and Mega. Fast hours: 3.3 / 15 / 30 / 60. Extra Fast time is listed at $4/hour.
Video as a side quest: Midjourney may be enough. Video as the channel (music videos, a locked AI singer): OpenArt’s model list is the reason to pay.

Commercial rights: the trap most comparisons miss
OpenArt. The pricing page puts commercial use on Plus, Pro, and Wonder. Starter does not. Terms of Service, last updated 30 July 2026, section 4.1:

Watermark-free is not a licence. A homepage marketing line about owning files and using them however you like is not the licence either. Generate client work on Plus or higher and keep the receipt.
Midjourney. Paid plans are the commercial path for individuals and smaller businesses. Official commercial-use docs: if you are part of a business grossing more than $1,000,000 USD a year, you need Pro or Mega to use the assets commercially for that company. No current free tier. Stealth is Pro/Mega.
Platform permission is not copyright in your country, and it does not wipe third-party IP in a prompt or a reference. Read the live Terms before you ship merch.
Who should buy which
Midjourney Standard if you live in stills, you want the house style, and you are under the $1M company rule. Basic is a trial with a card. Pro or Mega for Stealth or a $1M+ company.
OpenArt Plus if you need commercial rights and more than one model, or still to character to video without extra apps. Starter is for poking around. Pro or Wonder if credits disappear on video.
Both if Midjourney is the look and OpenArt is the finish. Two invoices. Only if each tool earns its line.
